Medical treatment planning and decision act - implications for GPs

ABOUT:

On 12 March 2018 the Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act 2016 commenced. This Act has given statutory recognition to advance care directives and simplified and contemporised laws relating to medical treatment decision making for people without decision making capacity. GPs need to be aware of the changes included into the Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act, and to incorporate the requirements into their practice.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Describe the role of the Advance Care Directive (ACD)
  2. Outline the decisions that an appointed Medical Treatment Decision Maker can and cannot make.
  3. Describe a systematic approach for evaluation of the legality and applicability of an ACD
