Managing breakthrough bleeding without abandoning treatment

This activity provides a practical approach to assessing expected versus concerning bleeding, modifying pill formulations, managing pharmacy substitution issues, and counselling patients to improve adherence and continuation.

This activity comprises a short educational video, followed by a reflective activity. Participants must complete both components to qualify for 30 minutes of Reviewing Performance (RP) Hours.

Learning Outcomes

1. Outline how to assess a patient with breakthrough bleeding on hormonal contraception, including adherence, missed pills and formulation.
2. Reflect on recent patient counselling to identify ways to reduce early discontinuation from breakthrough bleeding.
3. Identify one strategy to improve communication with community pharmacists about contraceptive pill substitutions.
