This update has been developed with a GP focus in order to expand the understanding of early diagnostic and management strategies for patients presenting with signs and symptoms of eating disorders. A psychiatrist with extensive experience in this subspecialty reviews and examines evidence, patient case studies and the available diagnostic and treatment options available to General Practitioners. This video also aims to assists GPs in formulating referral strategies with patients and their families, whilst establishing their role within a broader multidisciplinary team.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the symptoms of disturbances in eating behaviour as they present in the various eating disorders.
  2. Discuss the socio-cultural, psychological and biological risk factors that may contribute to the development of disordered eating.
  3. Explain the screening tools that can be used to conduct an initial evaluation and identify warning signs.
  4. Outline the referral pathways available to patients suffering from and eating disorder.
