Pelvic floor dysfunction, including urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, is common, significantly impacts quality of life, and frequently presents in general practice, yet many patients do not raise symptoms unless asked. This practical education activity will equip GPs with the confidence to proactively identify pelvic floor conditions, initiate evidence-based first-line management, and effectively coordinate multidisciplinary care with physiotherapists, continence nurses, and specialists. By enhancing knowledge of assessment, conservative treatment options, and referral pathways, participants will be better positioned to improve patient outcomes, reduce symptom burden, and provide holistic, patient-centred women's health care in everyday practice.

This activity is approved by the RACGP for the following CPD hours

Learning Outcomes

  1. Perform a structured assessment of women presenting with urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse symptoms.
  2. Apply evidence-based conservative management strategies for pelvic floor dysfunction in primary care.
  3. Counsel patients on available treatment options and support shared decision-making regarding pelvic floor interventions.
  4. Determine when referral to pelvic floor physiotherapy, continence services, urogynecology, or urology is appropriate.
