Pelvic Pain and Endometriosis: Assessment and Management in Primary Care

Persistent pelvic pain affects up to 1 in 4 women and people assigned female at birth, and endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 7 Australian women of reproductive age, yet the average time to diagnosis remains 6–8 years.¹ General practitioners are frequently the first clinician a patient sees before a diagnosis is established.

This webinar takes a case-based, clinically grounded approach. Rather than framing up the condition didactically, it opens in the consultation room and builds knowledge through two real-world GP presentations — persistent pelvic pain presenting as bladder pain syndrome and an early pelvic pain presentation in an adolescent with complex pain drivers. These are common presentations in general practice and often require thought outside historical frameworks.

Learning Outcomes

1. Outline a structured pelvic pain history that captures non-classic symptoms and red flags, including bladder, bowel, fatigue, and musculoskeletal presentations of endometriosis.
2. Recognise and manage bladder pain syndrome in general practice, including first-line non-pharmacological strategies
3. Outline the role of pelvic floor physiotherapy in the management of persistent pelvic pain, and the need for early referral.
4. Apply a biopsychosocial management framework for pelvic pain and endometriosis, including hormonal therapy options and early fertility counselling per RANZCOG guidance.
